This March, CDA’s Sheryl Abbott, Director of Interior Design, and Kara Church, Junior Interior Designer, received certification as Dementia Specialists. The certification program, Dementia Dialogues, was sponsored by (taught by faculty from) the University of South Carolina, Arnold School of Public Health, Office for the Study of Aging. The program focused on the unique caregiving and facility needs of dementia patients. The knowledge they received in this program enable Sheryl and Kara to design interior environments which more specifically meet the needs of this population.
As the American population ages, the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD) is growing steadily. An understanding of the disease and its process is necessary to improve the quality of life for patients with ADRD. CDA applauds Sheryl and Kara for expanding their knowledge on this important topic.
