Clemson, SC…On August 14, 2006, one of CDA’s project architects, Keith Sanders, AIA, LEED AP, attended and participated in the LEED v3 Visioning Workshop at Clemson University’s LEED Silver Advanced Materials Research Laboratory (AMRL), hosted by the USGBC-SC. The all-day event drew 30 participants from diverse sectors of the construction industry, including: product manufacturers, architects, engineers, Emerging Green Builders, planners, contractors, and facilities and construction services managers from institutions of higher learning. 21 themes or clusters of ideas were generated. Specific questions that were explored included: Market expansion (how can we increase the usage and applicability of LEED?); performance improvement (how can LEED help create better buildings and communities?); and business improvements (how can we drive down costs to LEED users and to USGBC?). After being ranked through a dot voting process, the common ideas within the top 10 clusters were then combined into a central idea and developed into 10 proposals. Proposals were evaluated by assessing their “pros” and “cons,” and assigned a cost for implementation and a cost/benefit number to help the USGBC compare all the proposals submitted by chapters hosting events nationwide.
