Midlands Technical College: Beltline Student Center (Columbia, SC)
While Midlands Technical College (MTC) has five campuses in the Columbia area, the Beltline campus is its center of student activity. College president, Dr. Jim Hudgins, requested a new facility that could house many student and administrative services and become a defining building for the MTC system. His criteria included a challenge: fit the new center where a demolished building once stood on a narrow, sloping site.

Using the land's slope to the buildings advantage, CDA designed a three-story facility with three sloped standing seam metal roof areas that organized the building design. Student services are located on this center level. The student bookstore, cafeteria and administrative offices are on the lower level, with on-grade entry and a student courtyard in the rear of the building. The third floor penthouse features the President's office suite, with interior access only, meeting his need to be close to students while maintaining some privacy. Featuring a panoramic view of the campus, this third floor suite adds height to the building's exterior and offers a distinctive look that both blends with existing campus facilities and also becomes the distinguishing focal point.
